From Pano Platres to Nicosia — Cyprus Travel Guide

From Pano Platres to Nicosia

Troodos and Mount Olympus

From Pano Platres via Troodos to Mount Olympus with clear visibility.

Panagia Forviotissa Church

On the way to Nicosia we make a detour to the Byzantine church Panagia Forviotissa (Asinou) near Nikitari.

Ledra Street

Next up is the island's capital Nicosia.

We walk through the old town along the main shopping street Ledra up to the border crossing. Memories of visiting East Germany come flooding back. Since the city (and Cyprus itself) has been divided since 1974, we decide to have a look around on the other side as well.

North Nicosia — Street Scenes

North Nicosia: Büyük Han

The former inn Büyük Han has been beautifully restored and today houses a few shops, as well as bars and restaurants in the rooms that once served as guest quarters. In the center stands a chapel beneath which there is a purification fountain, and each room was equipped with a fireplace.

North Nicosia: Selimiye Mosque

The former High Gothic church was built between 1209 and 1326 and then converted into the Selimiye Mosque in 1590 after the Ottoman conquest.

It is quite painful to see how this architectural masterpiece was altered.

South Nicosia: Laiki Yitoniá

We start in the renovated Laiki Yitoniá quarter where tourists mingle between small shops and restaurants in the narrow alleys. At night, this is where the party is. The quarter has been largely renovated and when not overcrowded, it is really cozy. When the alleys are packed in summer, you should keep a close eye on your belongings.

South Nicosia: Arablar Mosque

We continue north to the Arablar Mosque. The mosque is a former, very beautiful Gothic church from the 16th century with an octagonal dome near the Green Line.

South Nicosia: Phaneroméni Church

Right next to the Arablar Mosque stands the Phaneroméni Church, where Archbishop Kyprianos was buried after the Turks executed him in 1821.

South Nicosia: Archangel Michael Church

The church of Archangel Michael Trypiotis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The foundation stone was laid by Archbishop Germanos on May 3, 1695. That same year, on November 25, the church was completed.

South Nicosia: Omeriye Mosque

From the balcony of the minaret, you are said to have an interesting view of the divided city.

South Nicosia

Here we wrap up today's walking tour and head to Laiki Itoniá to find a nice restaurant. We end up at Rimi and order a Meze — a typical dish featuring a variety of Cypriot specialties. Only recommended if you are really hungry — but absolutely delicious. At Rimi you can also find affordable rooms.
