The Monastery of Agios Neofytos near Koili
Right after breakfast we head north. After about 10 km we reach the monastery of Agios Neofytos near Koili. What makes this monastery special is the cave church, carved into the rock by the hermit Neofytos in the 12th century. Biblical frescoes and a museum with ecclesiastical objects are on display, including books and manuscripts several hundred years old. In an underground chamber, visitors may drink or bottle "holy water." Neofytos attracted many students from Cyprus with his writings, who later founded the monastery beneath his sanctuary. In the parking lot, dozens of cats wait to be fed.
The Baths of Aphrodite
Another 26 km further, just past Polis, we reach the Baths of Aphrodite. Legend has it that Aphrodite bathed here after her love affairs. You can take wonderful hikes along the Adonis, Aphrodite, or Smigies Nature Trail into the adjacent Akamas Peninsula with views of the Mediterranean Sea. If you want to drive through Akamas from here, you should take a jeep — for safety reasons and especially for the fun factor.
Among other things, the excavation site features an Odeon, an early Christian church ruin, and parts of the ancient city wall. Not entirely permitted but all the more exciting is climbing the decommissioned lighthouse on the grounds, which offers a wonderful view over the entire site.
The Harbor of Paphos
At the harbor we visit the old fortress of Paphos (Páphos), dating from 1592, and enjoy the sunset. The boats line up in this idyllic harbor just like the bars and cafés beside them. It stays lively here well into the night.
