Baggage Regulations

Hand Luggage & Co

Hand Luggage in the European Union:

The maximum allowed weight for hand luggage varies by airline and ranges from 5 kg with budget carriers to 8 kg with Lufthansa.

Prohibited Items for Flights to the European Union:

Blunt, pointed, or sharp objects of any kind. Knives, scissors, nail scissors, nail files, manicure sets, cutlery, etc., glass bottles above a certain size (such as glass deodorant rollers).
We therefore recommend deodorant wipes for hand luggage.

All types of weapons, explosives, and ammunition such as stun guns and toy pistols.

Many types of sports equipment such as hiking poles, baseball bats, golf clubs, billiard cues, fishing rods, bowling balls, camera tripods, etc.
Easily flammable substances such as lighters, cleaning fluid, lighter fluid, nail polish remover, etc.

Chemical and toxic substances, all types of acids, corrosive substances, oxidizing substances such as bleaching powder, pepper sprays, and matches.

Poisonous or infectious substances such as clinical thermometers, bacterial and viral cultures.

The current list of "Prohibited Items on Flights" from the Federal Police can be found at www.bundespolizei.de

Since November 6, 2006, new regulations apply regarding the transport of liquids in hand luggage on EU flights:

All types of liquids, pastes, gels, creams, etc. must be carried in containers with a maximum capacity of 0.1 liters (= 100 ml), in a transparent, resealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 liter.

Liquids such as spirits, perfume, etc., purchased in duty-free shops or on board an aircraft from an EU country must be transported in tamper-proof sealed sales bags for hand luggage.

Liquids purchased at airports or on aircraft outside Europe can be problematic if the passenger has a stopover and needs to change planes. For example, a bottle of whisky purchased at a duty-free shop in Los Angeles would be confiscated during a stopover or plane change in Paris. The same applies to perfume purchased at duty-free shops if the bottle contains more than 100 ml.

Liquid baby food and special beverages for diabetics may continue to be carried in hand luggage in the quantity needed for the duration of the flight.

Screening of coats, jackets, and laptops will be intensified.

Hand Luggage USA:

Hand luggage contents: see European Union.
Exception: In the USA, liquids such as beverages and perfume purchased at duty-free shops beyond the security zone may again be carried in sealed travel luggage.
Liquids purchased outside the security zone may also be carried in small quantities (maximum 0.1 liters) in hand luggage.
However, these must be transported in a transparent plastic bag.

Special regulations for hand luggage dimensions: For flights departing from or within the USA, hand luggage must not exceed the following dimensions: 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm (all dimensions including wheels, handles, and side pockets, etc.)
