Tips for More Storage Space on Car Trips

Extra Storage Space for Your Trip

When it's time to travel, the excitement is naturally immense. We often plan our vacation months in advance down to the last detail. When the long-awaited trip finally arrives, all we need to do is gather our belongings and off we go. But this is where many people run into trouble. Packing luggage presents us with challenges time and again. We tend to bring more luggage than we actually need. On longer trips or especially during winter vacations, we naturally need more luggage than for a city break. But what can we do when we want to travel by car and the available storage space simply isn't enough?

Making the Most of Your Vehicle's Potential

Those traveling by car generally don't need to worry about space. Even a compact car has enough storage for the belongings of at least two people. It gets tricky, however, when your beloved four-legged friend comes along on vacation. Pets often get a spot in the trunk. But if it's a large dog, there's no room left for luggage. Of course, we can stow the travel bag and suitcase on the back seat, but then things get uncomfortably tight. The solution: high-quality roof racks for a roof cargo box. Sturdy roof racks can be mounted in no time. They serve as the foundation for a roof cargo box, a bike rack, or a ski carrier. With a roof rack, we can create an additional storage volume of several hundred liters.

Durable and robust roof racks help us make the most of our vehicle's full potential. Moreover, they are available at moderate prices, so the vacation budget won't take an extra hit. Besides these practical accessories, we should also pay special attention to proper vacation preparation. If we prepare well and use a checklist, we can avoid overpacking. We can create a checklist for clothing, the first-aid kit, and our sports equipment. A list is the best way to always maintain a clear overview. Plus, we can check off everything we've already packed.

Another option, primarily for clothing, are so-called packing cubes. Packing cubes or compression bags bring order and structure to your travel bag. These handy helpers are especially popular among digital nomads. Digital nomads are known for traveling light. For them, it's important that everything has its fixed place and is always within reach. But packing cubes are great for anyone about to go on a trip. Especially when storage space is a challenge, compression bags let us shrink our belongings without having to leave anything behind.

Avoiding Packing Mistakes

When packing luggage, quite a few things can go wrong. We usually pack without any particular system. Unfortunately, this leads to us stowing the items we should actually have within easy reach at the very bottom of the suitcase. As mentioned, checklists can help. Alternatively, we can organize our luggage by categories. For a winter vacation at the Arlberg, we obviously need warm winter clothing. These garments often take up a lot of space — especially the thick winter jacket or snow boots. Bulky or oversized items and clothing can be stored in the roof cargo box. Everything else goes inside the car.
