Tips for Your Perfect Adventure Road Trip Through South Tyrol
Summer is the perfect time for a road trip. Leave everyday life behind and experience adventure — not just in exotic places. Nearby destinations like the northern Italian region of South Tyrol also offer great potential for a varied vacation.
Discovering Wild Romantic Nature in the South Tyrolean Alps
Dream beaches can quickly become boring when the only distraction is gazing at <link karibik-inseln>the colors of the sea. South Tyrol, on the other hand, is considered a versatile destination. Cities like Bolzano and Merano are known for their romantic old towns with Art Nouveau buildings, Italian flair, and excursion opportunities into the South Tyrolean Alps. As the provincial capital and largest city in the region, Merano is the ideal starting point for a South Tyrol road trip. Those who want to discover the wild romantic nature of the Dolomites and go hiking, climbing, or mountaineering should also think about the right equipment. Comfortable accommodations such as the Belvita Active Hotels provide backpacks, hiking poles, or snowshoes so that the mountain adventure can begin. Hiking trails and mountain bike tours lead to wine-growing villages like Eppan, Kaltern on the Wine Road, and Kurtatsch. In summer, a trip to Lake Prags (Pragser Wildsee) is a must. The mountain lake, situated at an altitude of 1,496 meters, is part of the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park. Many legends surround the lake with its shimmering blue, turquoise, and green waters. One myth claims that Lake Prags is the gateway to the underworld, in whose depths the realm of the Fanes Queen lies hidden. When you hike through the Prags Valley, you reach the villages of Außerprags, Innerprags, Schmieden, and St. Veit, which are surrounded by the Prags Dolomites, the so-called "pale mountains."
Castles, Palaces, and Nature Parks
In the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park, a visit to the Plätzwiese is well worth it. The high plateau, located at an altitude of 2,000 meters, lies at the southern end of the Prags Valley and is framed by the mountain massifs of the Tre Cime (Three Peaks), the Hohe Gaisl, the Tofana, and Monte Cristallo. The view from the Plätzwiese across the mountains is indescribable. Be sure to bring a camera! The village of Prags has been the venue for 25 years for the mountain bike race Dolomiti Superbike. The prominent Italian actor and director Terence Hill filmed in Prags for the TV series "Die Bergpolizei — Ganz nah am Himmel" (The Mountain Police). On a road trip through South Tyrol, the Puster Valley should not be missed. The idyllic landscape, characterized by beautiful forests, wide gentle meadows, high plateaus, and sleepy little villages, stretches between Lienz and Brixen. If you are traveling by car or off-road vehicle, it is best to drive past the Mühlbacher Klause to Terenten. While the Sonnenstraße (Sun Road — it really is called that!) branches off the main road leading to the municipalities of Kiens, Issing, and Pfalzen, the main road takes you directly to Bruneck, the principal town of the Puster Valley. From a distance, you can already see the Bishop's Castle, enthroned on a green hill. Bruneck Castle houses the Messner Mountain Museum RIPA. In the town center, a stroll through the Bruneck Stadtgasse is worthwhile — it is considered the most beautiful shopping street in South Tyrol. The best view of the town of Bruneck can be enjoyed from Plan de Corones (Kronplatz). The 2,275-meter-high Kronplatz is the local mountain of Bruneck and also a well-known ski resort.
