Sahara Travel Report - Ksar Ghillane

From Tuar Azul to the Oasis of Ksar Ghillane

Sunday, November 21st

Today a long ride and march to the Oasis of Ksar Ghillane lies ahead. At times the soft sand makes walking very exhausting, so riding made more sense. In return, the dunes were incredibly beautiful.

Oasis of Ksar Ghillane

At the edge of the oasis we camp in a formerly cultivated part that the Sahara is slowly reclaiming. The green areas of the oasis are unbelievable — after a week of sand they almost don't seem real.

Now it's time to put on our swimwear and hop into the oasis's thermal spring — what an amazing feeling — water!!! Afterwards we do a bit of shopping and explore the oasis.

Camp at Ksar Ghillane

At noon we hand over the gifts we brought for our two Bedouins Mohammed and Achmed, whom we have grown very fond of by now. The two would have given up their blankets so we wouldn't freeze. That's something you rarely see in our culture anymore — sharing, even when there's barely anything to share. So from a human perspective this was just as much of an amazing experience as the extraordinary desert surroundings.

At the evening campfire the last wine is drunk, and with live music from Achmed, Mohammed and one of their friends we sing, dance, and sadly already begin saying goodbye in our hearts.

From the Oasis of Ksar Ghillane to Tunis

Monday, November 22nd

At 7:00 AM our taxi arrives at camp and we drive back to Tunis. Along the way there are several villages and stunning rock formations. We enjoy the beautiful landscape one more time before reaching Tunis after a good 2 hours. If you're traveling by rental car, don't let anyone sell you watered-down fuel at the roadside canister stations.

Tunis - Capital of Tunisia

In Tunis we visit the bazaar and take a short break. Countless spices, fruits, pottery and other products are on display here waiting for buyers. A visit to the bazaar is well worth it.

Unfortunately, this is where our journey through Tunisia and the Sahara comes to an end. All that remains to say is — we'll be back. The support from Steffi at Sandfisch.de was excellent, warm-hearted and great fun.
