Oakhurst to San Francisco

From Oakhurst to San Francisco

April 14

We leave Oakhurst — and with it the Yosemite area — and head along Highway 49 (a route dotted with charming old Western towns) toward the historic Western town of Sonora. Here we visit Columbia State Historic Park, a living museum complete with stagecoach, blacksmith, saloons, historic fire engines, various carriages, a gold-panning demonstration and everything else you would expect from a proper Wild West town. Demonstrations take place throughout the day, and somehow you instantly feel transported back to the era of the Wild West.
We spend lunchtime in the historic town of Sonora itself, taking a short stroll through the streets — there are still many buildings in Western style here. The museum and the old jail building are also said to be worth a visit.
Our next stop is Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, located just south of Sonora. Here you will find a collection of historic steam locomotives, including Engine No. 3, which has appeared in countless Hollywood productions (The A-Team, Bonanza, Back to the Future, and more). There are also rarities such as a 1912 Ford converted to run on rails for track inspection. The entire roundhouse is one of only two remaining in their original condition in the whole United States. Visitors can admire old tools, wagons and diesel locomotives that can adjust their gauge. An absolute must for any railway enthusiast — be sure to join one of the guided tours, where a great deal is explained and fascinating stories are told.
After crossing the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge (note: toll applies), we arrive in San Francisco by early evening — our destination for today. We explore the surrounding area and have dinner at the Cheesecake Factory (delicious, and it is not just cheesecake on the menu).
