Old San Juan – Puerto Rico

Fuerte San Cristóbal

A walking tour of Old San Juan pairs perfectly with a visit to the Fuerte San Cristóbal fortress. More information: www.nps.gov

Barrio La Perla

Walking along the Boulevard del Valle by the sea and looking down to the right, you'll see Barrio La Perla – originally built to house the city's soldiers. Around 10,000 people live here in very close quarters – it's best visited with a local guide, as it can be unsafe for visitors unfamiliar with the area.

La Casa de los Peluches

There's also a rather unusual house worth discovering here – La Casa de los Peluches, a house covered in stuffed animals at the edge of the old city, created by Puerto Rican artist Thomas Huerta.

San Felipe del Morro

The Castillo de San Felipe del Morro is an absolute must for every visitor! The fortress – built on a promontory – guards the harbor entrance right next to the old city of San Juan.

Puerta de San Juan

Another highlight of Old San Juan is the Puerta de San Juan, the historic city gate. Right next to it is a plaza with a wonderful view over San Juan's harbor.

Calle del Cristo

The Calle del Cristo is lined with shops and boutiques – perfect for a leisurely stroll.
