Dive Trip to the RMS Rhone off Tortola

At the pier we meet Steve and his son and hop in a taxi. About fifteen minutes of coastline driving later, we arrive at the UBS Dive Center in Harbour View Marina on the East End.

We find ourselves at a charming little spot — the dive center makes a great impression and we receive a warm welcome. We quickly go through the usual formalities and load our equipment on board. A small but speedy motorboat takes us through the Sir Francis Drake Channel to the RMS Rhone wreck. At last — time to dive again.

The RMS Rhone is the wreck of a 103-meter luxury ocean liner — a steamship also equipped with sails. It is the most famous wreck in the British Virgin Islands. In 1867 it sank during a hurricane near the Salt Islands, south of Tortola.

The wreck lies at depths between 10 and 25 meters. Several sections of the Rhone are truly spectacular — the engine, the mast with its crow's nest, the anchor, and the enormous propeller.

Dive 2: Reef Dive

On the other side of Salt Island we do a second dive at Chromas Reef. A magnificent array of soft corals and an abundance of colorful fish, lobster, and sea spiders make for a perfect finale to our diving excursion.

Just before 1:00 pm our trip ends back at the dive center.

Unfortunately it's now too late to make it to Virgin Gorda.

So we grab another taxi and head back to Road Town.
