Indian River on Dominica
The Indian River is only about 15 km long, with just the first 1.5 km being navigable. Its banks are lined with mangroves, palms and wild hibiscus, and the rare Sisserou parrot calls this place home. On a boat tour along the Indian River, you can discover many more animal and plant species. At the end of the navigable stretch, you'll find a very friendly bar that can also be rented for parties. If the Indian River looks familiar, here's the explanation: alongside 4 other locations on Dominica, it served as a filming location for Pirates of the Caribbean.
Cabrits National Park
The Cabrits National Park on the north coast of Dominica combines three different attractions:
· the Cabrit Peninsula with its tall trees, tree ferns, swamp areas and abundant wildlife
· the fish-rich coastal waters with underwater caves and several shipwrecks, victims of the war between the French and British or the reefs.
· Fort Shirley overlooking Douglas Bay on one side and Prince Rupert Bay on the other. We visit part of the historic ruins and Fort Shirley with its view of Portsmouth.
Admission EC$12.50.
Bird Watching Tour with Mr. Birdy
Bertrand Ino Baptiste, alias Mr. Birdy, can be booked for birdwatching and eco tours. Mr. Birdy is a contributor to Dominica's bird guide and therefore has excellent knowledge of the local birdlife. A tour starts in the Morne Diablotins National Park and passes various gardens on the way to a stunning waterfall — Syndicate Waterfall! It continues through all kinds of plantations where you learn a lot about local plants and fruits. The highlight of the tour is the bird watching itself.
In Morne Diablotins National Park
At the entrance of Morne Diablotins National Park, you start the trail through the rainforest and pass a steep jungle gorge where you see huge, ancient and spectacular trees.
You can watch parrots foraging and even spot the rare Imperial Amazon parrot through binoculars.
