The Caribbean Island of Carriacou - Grenada

What makes Carriacou special:

The island of Carriacou belongs to the Caribbean island of Grenada.

Carriacou is the southernmost island of the Grenadines and is part of Grenada, an island group within the Lesser Antilles between St. Vincent and Grenada. Carriacou has an area of approximately 34 km² and around 7,000 inhabitants.

The capital of the island is Hillsborough with about 600 residents. Along Main Street you'll find several restaurants, hotels, a tourist information office, banks, and a fish and vegetable market.
Hillsborough is also home to a botanical garden, which has since been renovated.
There are no nightclubs, only one gas station, but pure vacation bliss.

Other larger settlements include Argyle, Dumfries, Grand Bay, Meldrum, L'Esterre, and L'Appelle.

Carriacou is of volcanic origin and hilly. However, the highest hill on the island reaches only 291 meters. The elevation is not sufficient to cause passing clouds to release rain, which is why Carriacou has no rivers and is significantly drier than Grenada.

During the rainy season, water is collected in cisterns and ponds to last through the dry season.

PLEASE do not waste water.

Carriacou is surrounded by numerous coral reefs and island groups, making it a top destination for divers as well. A highlight is certainly the underwater volcano, just a few kilometers off the island — though it lies at a depth of 120 meters.

Beautiful beaches all around Carriacou make a beach holiday unforgettable too.

Carriacou has left-hand traffic. If you want to rent a car, you must obtain a local driving permit at the police station by presenting your driver's license. The island can also be conveniently explored by taxi (complete island tour EC$ 200) or bus (EC$ 2 for half the island).

Sandy Island - Carriacou

Also very popular is Sandy Island — a small sandy islet covered with palm trees. It's reachable by water taxi from Paradise Beach.

At Paradise Beach you can relax wonderfully with a view of Sandy Island. There is a small restaurant and a bus stop right on the beach.

Carriacou is a popular stop for sailing yachts cruising through the Grenadines.

The most beautiful beaches on Carriacou

Among the most beautiful beaches on the island are Paradise Beach south of Hillsborough and Anse la Roche Bay in the north (only accessible on foot, by boat, or by jeep).

From the jetty, the boat dock in Hillsborough, you can take a boat to numerous islands or to Anse La Roche Bay.

South of Paradise Beach, you can take guided boat tours to see natural oyster beds, the Oyster Beds.

Windward

On the east coast, the village of Windward is home to mostly descendants of Scottish immigrants who are known for their shipbuilding. Cedar wood boats up to 30 meters long are built here using simple tools.

More attractions on Carriacou
