Black River, YS Falls & Appleton Rum Estate
Tuesday, April 2, 2013
The big tour day has arrived:
With Joseph Powell, a licensed and insured tour operator, we head to Black River and YS Falls. All other sightseeing tours and taxi services are also available: Tel: (1876) 458-6485 or (1876) 565-8629. He was one of the few drivers who stayed sober on the road with us.
Black River Safari
Stop 1: Black River: We take a boat ride along the Black River. Many crocodiles live here — they are lured out for tourists with chicken and fish and happily put on a show. Among them is Geoffrey (according to our guide, around 60 years old and certainly one of the largest). You can also observe many heron species up close and spot eagles.
Along the way we stop in a small town called "Middleton" or similar, known for its spicy shrimps sold right along the coastal road — delicious, but beware: very hot! Starting from 100 Jamaican dollars. Just ask your driver.
YS Falls in Jamaica
Stop 2: YS Falls: A tractor takes guests through the beautiful landscape with fern and moss-covered trees and horse paddocks. The YS Falls consist of several waterfalls and natural pools where you can swim. If you like, you can also try canopy (zip line), river tubing, or horseback riding. The grounds below the waterfalls are beautifully landscaped and definitely worth a visit. It is advisable to check that no cruise ship is docked in port if you want a bit of peace and quiet.
Appleton Rum Estate in Jamaica
Stop 3: The Appleton Rum Estate: After a short film and a first tasting of the world-famous rum, we head off on a guided tour of the production grounds. We visit the rum factory, the distillery, and one of the "smallest" warehouses. We also get a glimpse into rum-making from bygone times. By the way: Appleton Rum is sold in 50 countries, and the anniversary vintage — the 50-year-old rum — costs US$5,000.
