Martinique - The Southwest

The Southwest of Martinique

Maison de la Canne

Maison de la Canne is an old sugar cane plantation located near Trois Illets. An exhibition vividly recounts the history of sugar cane cultivation and the slave trade.

Pointe du Bout

To reach Pointe du Bout, simply continue to Village Creole, where you'll find boutiques, cafés, and charming Creole-style cottages that invite you to stroll around. The village also offers a tranquil harbor and several restaurants.

Anse du Four & Anse de Noir

Continuing along the D7, a small side road branches off to the right, leading to the two gorgeous beaches Anse du Four and Anse de Noir. At the end of the road, just walk down the steps to reach them — one with white sand, the other with black.

Grande Anse

Back on the D7, continue along the road and you'll inevitably arrive at a small fishing village. In the beautifully situated Grande Anse, colorful fishing boats bob at anchor, and the adjacent beach Anse-d'Arlet is well worth a visit too.

Rocher du Diamant

A magnificent view of Rocher du Diamant (Diamond Rock) can be enjoyed from the lookout point just a few kilometers from Grande Anse. The basalt Rocher du Diamant rises 176 meters high off the southern tip of the island, jutting out of the sea like a volcanic peak. The British used the rock as a fortress over 200 years ago, attacking French ships from here. In 1805, a French-Spanish fleet of 16 ships recaptured the fortification of Rocher du Diamant. Today the rock is a nature reserve and a breeding ground for many bird species.

Maison du Bagnard & Memorial da l'Anse Cafford

Just before the village of Diamant, you'll find a small, charming cottage — la Maison du Bagnard. A short distance further stands a memorial for a large slave ship that sank off the coast in April 1830, taking all its passengers with it — the Memorial da l'Anse Cafford.

Ste-Anne

Near the town of Ste-Anne on the eastern side, you'll find yet another stunning beach on Martinique. A short visit to the laid-back town of Ste-Anne is well worth it, with its beautiful old houses. The gorgeous white sandy beach is perfect for relaxing and swimming.

Le Marin

In Le Marin, colorful boats, sailboats, and yachts jostle for space; Le Marin boasts the largest marina in the Caribbean, and the old 18th-century church is another highlight of the town. If you stop here, you can also discover beautiful old buildings and ruins in Le Marin.
