Cayo Largo

Turtle Farm, Playa Paraiso & Playa Sirena on Cayo Largo

Playa Paraiso & Playa Sirena

October 24

We cast off and explore the famous Playa Paraiso. We sail past Playa Sirena and anchor just off Playa Paraiso. We swim the short distance to the beach and take a long beach walk before heading back on board to our next stop, the Island of the Iguanas. We anchor right in front of the island. The iguanas are already waiting eagerly, hoping for some food of course. Naturally, we have bananas and food scraps with us. The iguanas live here in complete freedom and on this beach you'll find an incredible number of shells - truly a unique place!

Turtle Farm Cayo Largo

To wrap up the day, we head to the marina of Cayo Largo and anchor there. Jesus promised us that we'd visit the turtle farm, which Daniela had visited about 20 years ago. Here  we learn a lot about the lives of these extraordinary animals. After washing our hands, we're even allowed to take them out, pet them and of course feed them.
Our highlight is releasing the baby turtles! The turtles are first carried in a large tub to a beach, where we line them up in a row on the sand. Now one or another sets off after finding its bearings. We watch as they suddenly "race off." We have to give a few late starters a little help.

Evening on Cayo Largo

At the marina, there are some souvenir shops and a restaurant that we visit in the evening. We have the choice between pizza and chicken. At the marina of Cayo Largo, night owls can - depending on the season - also dance to Cuban rhythms at a nightclub, but unfortunately it's closed this evening.
