Walking Tour in Funchal Part II
December 27
Today we try a different route into the city. Via the Av. do Infante we first arrive at the Casino of Funchal, which somehow looks like a crown of thorns and was built in 1970. Right next to it is the Pestana Casino Park Hotel, which also hosts occasional events. In front of the hotel stands a bronze Sissi statue. The former empress stayed here in 1860/61 in a quinta that was unfortunately demolished. Along the way we linger in the adjoining Santa Catarina Park.
Park Santa Catarina
A little further along we reach Park Santa Catarina. The Parque de Santa Catarina sits above the harbor basin and stretches across the hangar area. From here you can see the cruise ships docked in the port. The park is also home to the baroque Capela de Santa Catarina and a historic pink manor house from the 17th century that serves as the official residence and guesthouse of the President of the Regional Government of Madeira.
Fortaleza do Pico
We now head up to Fortaleza do Pico high above Funchal, as this is said to offer the best views of the city. But before we tackle the steep climb, we make a stop at the Museo Quinta das Cruzes, which we spotted in passing and luckily peeked inside since the gate was open. Here you will find a lovely little park adorned with numerous spolia and an 18th-century manor house that vividly illustrates how Madeira's wealthy citizens once lived. Unfortunately we couldn't see the collections of upper-class everyday objects from earlier times, as the exhibition was closed.
Right, now it's steeply uphill to Fortaleza do Pico, perched 111 meters above Funchal on Pico dos Frias and dating back to the 17th century. Regrettably, we cannot enjoy what is supposedly the finest viewpoint over Funchal from the fortress itself, as it is closed for restoration. However, below the fortress there is a path that also offers magnificent views, and the cafe nearby is well worth a visit too.
A little disappointed, we head back into the city center, passing the Convento de Santa Clara, a Poor Clares convent from the late 15th century (guided tours are available) and the Casa Museu Frederico de Fritas, a 17th-century villa where you can see antique furniture, azulejos and more. Another museum along our route is the Museum of Natural History (Municipal Museum of Funchal) with information about Madeira's flora and fauna. It also houses a small aquarium showcasing Madeira's marine life.
Praca do Municipio - Funchal
Next we visit the Praca do Municipio. Here, on the black and white cobblestone square, you will find some of Funchal's most important buildings. First is the Town Hall of Funchal, which has stood here since the late 19th century and was formerly the baroque palace and city residence of the Counts of Carvalhal. On the northwest side stands the former Jesuit college, which today houses the University of Madeira. Attached to it is the impressive Igreja do Colegio. Opposite the church lies the Bishop's Palace, which currently hosts the Museum of Sacred Art, the Museo de Arte Sacra.
In the evening we visit the Christmas market once again and enjoy a concert in the Jardim Municipal.
