Sunrise at Haleakala
The day starts extremely early. The alarm goes off at 4 am. We quickly get dressed, stop by the supermarket around the corner to grab plenty of coffee and snacks, then hit the road. First we head towards Kahului, then take Kula Highway 37 to just before Kula. From there, Waipoli Road winds its way up the mountain to 3,055 meters above sea level. We arrive at the parking lot of the Haleakala National Park Visitor Center at 5:30 am and are glad to have brought sweaters, a beanie and a windproof jacket. The temperatures are freezing. We walk about 15 minutes towards the crater to avoid the crowds that have gathered here. Then we witness a magnificent sunrise above the crater. According to the brochures, it is the most beautiful sunrise in the world. The early wake-up was truly worth it.
Puu Ulaula at 3,055 Meters
After the sunrise, we walk the last few meters to the Puu Ulaula Overlook. At 3,055 meters above sea level, you have a fantastic view over Maui including the volcano and down to the south coast — bringing binoculars is well worth it. There are various hiking trails and options for overnight stays in the volcano, but unfortunately we don't have enough time. You can find all important information here: www.nps.gov/hale/index.htm
Afterwards, we drive to the east coast via HWY 360 (Hana Highway) towards Hana. A beautiful, winding, partly single-lane road along the coast awaits us, which we follow until we stop for a picnic break near Kalua before turning back. You should plan a whole day for the drive to Hana, as the Americans driving here aren't really used to roads like these. At MM 2, we take a short walk into the bamboo forest to the Twin Falls, which we can't quite reach due to very muddy terrain.

Paia
In the town of Paia, we briefly stop at the Mantokuji Mission of Paia, but don't linger any longer.
