Soller Bay on Mallorca

Southwest Maui & Snorkeling Trip

The South Coast of Maui

South Maui

Today we head south all the way to the end of Makena Road. At Wailea we make our first stop. Wailea Beach Park is a great spot for snorkeling and has showers.

Just before the entrance to Makena State Park, a dirt road leads to Red Sand Beach. At Big Beach in Makena State Park we take another sun break.

On the way south, large but unassuming properties with villas facing the ocean keep catching our eye. Many a film and music star has their vacation residence here. Then we reach the lava flows from the late 17th century. A narrow road winds through the old lava streams, eventually turning into a gravel track. Without four-wheel drive, it's best to turn back here.

Whale Watching

Shortly before sunset we head out for whale watching from Maalaea and are once again lucky enough to spot many humpback whales. One in the photos is even a baby.

Sunset at Kalepolepo Beach Park

Before dinner, the sunset at Kalepolepo Beach Park on the way to Kihei beckons. Then we enjoy a delicious steak at Moos & Freds.

Swimming in Kihei & Whale Watching on Hawaii's Maui Island

Swimming & Snorkeling at Kamaloe Beach

South of Kihei lies the beautiful Kamaloe beach, a popular snorkeling spot with restroom facilities that is also very popular with locals and divers. There are grottoes and coral reefs to explore.

Whale Watching

We simply can't resist and head out for whale watching once more. Unfortunately, today's outing is only moderately successful, as the boat has to stay close to shore for a long time due to strong wind gusts. The harbor of Ma'alaea, from which we depart, is the second windiest spot in the world.

Kihei Beach

Before picking up our suitcases at the hotel for our onward journey to Molokai, we soak up a little more sun at Kihei beach and munch on our roast chicken.

Onward Flight to Molokai

At 7:15 PM we leave Maui airport with Island Air heading for Molokai. The propeller plane is built for the relatively short runway on the island.
