At 9 am we meet for the rescheduled Mayfield Falls & Mineral Spring tour in Glenbrook, Westmoreland, which was supposed to take place on the day of our Black River Safari. The road winds through gorgeous highland scenery up into the mountains. The drive from Negril takes about an hour.
At the entrance, guides are already waiting — they make their living from tips earned during the tour. We're lucky to be the first visitors at the river. A bamboo bridge leads through the pristine landscape to the waterfalls.
Our guide Obrian leads us at a relaxed pace upstream through the riverbed. There are various spots and pools along the way where we can swim, scramble over rocks and wade through the river. The guide tells you exactly where to step and takes plenty of photos along the way. Highlights include the "Washing Machine", the "Whirlpool", a raised platform to jump from, climbing behind the waterfall, and diving through a rock tunnel. It all takes place in a wonderful, natural setting.
The taxi ride for 4 people costs around US$ 120 plus US$ 15 admission per person, or about US$ 55 per person all-inclusive.
