Cayo Guano to Cayo Largo

Crossing to Cayo Largo and Playa Sirena

October 22

Right after breakfast, the sailing trip continues to Cayo Largo across the open sea and then along the coast, past the dream beaches. Past numerous hotels that have increased significantly since Dany's visit 20 years ago. Yet all kept low-rise and well integrated into the surroundings.

Cuba: Cayo Largo - Playa Sirena

After about 7-8 hours (according to our captain Jesus: it depends on the wind and faster is possible), we're finally rewarded for the long crossing: We stop at the first dream beach on Cayo Largo called Playa Sirena, or more precisely at the end of Playa Sirena at the headland on the way to the harbor. Jesus "parks" right on the beach and we can go ashore without the dinghy. We swim a few laps first and explore the headland. A Bucanero (the Cuban beer) and a Cuba Libre are a must here. We've finally arrived! Here we also see a jumping ray freeing itself of parasites, and 2 dolphins pass by into the bay. We anchor for dinner and sleep in front of the marina entrance to Cayo Largo.

Los Ballenatos & Natural Pool

October 23

We cast off and explore the underwater world of the offshore reef. The catamaran stops at the colorful coral reef of Los Ballenatos, which offers fantastic snorkeling conditions. We snorkel here for almost an hour. Thanks to our apnea course that we took some time ago, we can dive right into the underwater world even without diving equipment. We've also armed ourselves with a plastic bottle filled with bananas and bread - a treat for the fish. After so much physical activity, it's off to our next stop at the Natural Pool. In the Natural Pool, you can wade almost knee-deep. Rays also pass through here, and you'll see loads of large starfish. A wonderful place to let your soul unwind. In the evening, we anchor again for dinner and sleep in front of the marina entrance to Cayo Largo. Here we see our dolphins again and even hear them "blowing" at night. Before going to sleep, there's a game of dominoes with the captain - who unfortunately only wins 1 game out of the over 30 rounds.
