Turtle Nesting
05:20 the alarm goes off — we want to join Dino for one more "turtle hunt" and photograph the hatchlings emerging from their nests. Right in front of our hotel we find a "late-night turtle" digging a nest for egg-laying... but we really wanted to see the babies.... off we go. After about 1 hour on the beach in the blazing heat we give up — we find plenty of freshly abandoned nests, but the baby turtles were faster than us. Too bad! Note: from 18:00 to 06:00 the beach is closed — to protect the turtles.
Nature Photography
Our great tour guide Frank kindly shared this wonderful photo of the turtle for publication — the one we missed on our extended beach walk. You can see more stunning nature photos from Costa Rica on his website. On Facebook: Frank-Simms-photo-corner.
At 09:00 we begin the long journey back by boat and bus to the airport in San José. Along the way there is still a lunch stop at the Mawamba Group lodge in the rainforest, before we pick up our rental car at the airport around 16:00 for the onward trip.
Our next destination: the active Poás Volcano, located about 30 minutes (37 km) from the airport. The drive passes through breathtakingly beautiful scenery. Unfortunately the main route is closed due to construction work, so we don't arrive at the hotel until after dark.
