Exploring the South of Mauritius

April 26 - Day Trip No. 6

Horseback Riding by the Sea at Le Morne

Today a dream comes true for Dany: galloping along a sandy beach and then swimming in the sea with the horse. This is possible at Haras du Morne. Horse riding excursions on Le Morne are also available.

Admittedly, this experience is not exactly cheap, but for horse lovers it's worth every cent. The horses and the facility are very well maintained and there are many options and offers - even for non-riders!

The beach is also stunningly beautiful and perfect for swimming.

Rochester Falls

After this unique experience, we head to the Rochester Falls. You should bring swimwear for a quick dip here. A wonderful refreshment under the waterfall in the shade of the trees. Absolutely recommended. An idyllic spot for a picnic, by the way.

Gris Gris & Riambel Beaches

We then head to the stunning beach of Gris Gris near Riambel. Riambel also boasts an seemingly endless dream beach.

Vallee des Couleurs

We turn around and shortly after head inland towards the Black River National Park. Along the way, we pass the Vallee des Couleurs. Another park that also offers zipline, quad tours and horseback riding in beautiful surroundings. We skip it and continue uphill.

Ganga Talao Temple

Our next stop is Bassin Blanc. A lake in the middle of the mountains that's worth a photo stop. Shortly after, we reach Grand-Bassin with the impressive Ganga Talao temple. An almost 6-lane road leads to this temple, which is one of the most important holy sites for Mauritians of Indian descent. At the entrance stand two huge statues, one of them of Shiva. Caution: there are numerous monkeys here on the prowl, which can be quite aggressive, especially when they have young ones with them!
