Exploring the Southwest of Mauritius

Exploring the Southwest of Mauritius

April 20
The first day trip is here. Caution: they drive on the left!

We start from Flic en Flac along the west coast heading south. Past Tamarin with its salt pans and the departure point for dolphin and whale watching tours. At the church of Grande Case Noyale, we turn left towards Chamarel. Just before Chamarel, there is a sensational viewpoint overlooking Le Morne and the west coast.

Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark

We continue into the Seven Colored Earth Park. Our first stop there is the Chamarel waterfalls. The Riviere de Cap plunges nearly 100 meters into the depths here. The waterfall cascades over two-million-year-old lava flows. From a viewing platform, you can admire this waterfall. With a bit of luck, you may also spot endemic species such as flying foxes here.
The second stop is the Seven Colored Earth site, where the ground shimmers in different colors depending on the sunlight, formed from the cooled earth of a volcanic eruption. Here you'll also find a kiosk and an enclosure with giant tortoises.

Chamarel

We drive back to the village of Chamarel and visit the church of St. Anne from 1876, an important stop on a pilgrimage route. A popular destination in Chamarel is the Rhumerie de Chamarel Restaurant & Rum Distillery. Rum tastings are offered here, and there's a lovely restaurant.

If you fancy a hike, you can trek to the Tamarind Falls, the seven waterfalls. It's a very demanding hike. Guided tours and canyoning are also available, organized by Otelair.com and verticalworld.co among others.

Baie du Cap & Le Morne

We continue to the south coast at Baie du Cap. At Cap Maconde, there's a viewpoint on a cliff with the Captain Matthew Flinders Monument. The Maconde Peak offers wonderful hiking trails with stunning views. Then we turn around and stop at Le Morne once more for the beach and the Slave Memorial. Le Morne Brabant has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Mauritius was once a center of the slave trade. Many escaped slaves are said to have hidden here on Le Morne to flee their tormentors. Le Morne can be climbed with a guide, though the tour is quite strenuous.
