The South of Dominica

The South of Dominica

Thursday, October 15th

Today it's time to say goodbye to Dominica. But since we still have some time before the ferry departs, we want to visit the Soufrière in the far south, the Soufrière Sulphur Springs, and the Trafalgar Twin Falls.

Soufrière Bay & Scotts Head Village

First, we drive about an hour to the southern tip of Dominica to Scotts Head Village, a small fishing village with a historic church and hot springs in the sea. On a peninsula stands Fort Cachacrou. Numerous whale watching excursions also depart from here.

Trafalgar Falls - Waterfalls

Next, we head back a bit and then up into the rainforest to Laudat, until we reach the Trafalgar Falls. Two waterfalls plunge from 60 m height parallel to each other into the depths, form a pool, and then merge into the Roseau River. The left fall carries warm water, while the right one brings cold water. From a platform, you have a magnificent view of this spectacle. There are paths to the pools, but they can only be accessed at your own risk (15 min.). The area is surrounded by volcanic rock and partially hot spring water. In places, mineral deposits have colored the rock orange. (Admission EC$ 13.50 - US$ 5.00 or the weekly pass to all Dominica Forest, Wildlife & National Parks for EC$ 32.04 - US$ 12.00).

Soufrière Sulphur Springs

To round off this impressive and beautiful tour, we make a detour to the thermal springs and catch a glimpse of the Soufrière Sulphur Springs. Below the source, there are two small and very cozy "thermal baths." We go swimming in the Tia's Bamboo Hot Springs in pools of varying temperatures. Simply wonderful — and if we had a few more days, we would certainly have spent another night in this gorgeous setting. You can rent rooms at Tia's Bamboo Cottages. There is also a bar and restaurant. The rooms are charmingly rustic.

Roseau - The Capital of Dominica

We make a quick detour into the hills above Roseau. Up here live and work the island's church leaders, politicians, and wealthier residents.
The view of the capital is breathtaking. It is fondly called the one million dollar view. Between the villas stand the ruins of old buildings, left as memorials after various hurricanes.

Botanical Garden - Roseau

In the Botanical Garden of Roseau, we visit the impressive tree that also had its role in Pirates of the Caribbean and the famous school bus that was crushed by an African Baobab tree during Hurricane David. Fortunately, the bus was empty.

Departure for Guadeloupe

At 3:00 PM, the ferry departs from the island capital Roseau. After about 1.5 hours on the speedboat of www.express-des-iles.fr, we arrive at the port of Pointe-à-Pitre and pick up our rental car. After about 1.5 hours of driving, including rush hour traffic in Pointe-à-Pitre, we reach our hotel Sucrerie in Ste-Anne via a detour.
