Island Tour of Guadeloupe in Autumn
Here we report on our island tour of the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. We are traveling for 17 days, visiting the offshore islands of Marie-Galante and Les Saintes as well as the two main islands Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre.
We explore the beaches, the active Soufriere volcano, the rainforest, and many other noteworthy places, letting ourselves be captivated by the charm of the islands.
Flight: Mulhouse -> Paris -> Pointe-a-Pitre
September 26
Departure from Mulhouse at 8:50 am > Arrival at Paris Orly at 10:10 am.
The first leg to Paris takes one hour and 20 minutes. Then Air France takes us in 8.5 hours to Pointe-a-Pitre on Guadeloupe for EUR 530 per person. The plane departs from Paris at 12:00 noon and lands at 2:25 pm local time on Guadeloupe. We turn the clocks back 6 hours.
The great thing about flying from Mulhouse is that it is essentially a domestic flight within France and therefore very affordable.
In the Center of Pointe-a-Pitre
For EUR 10 we take a taxi into the city center and check into our first hotel for the night. We are staying at the Hotel Saint John Perse in Pointe-a-Pitre by the harbor: on-site price EUR 65; booked via Expedia for EUR 74 including breakfast and Wi-Fi. The hotel is a beautiful old colonial-style building, but it shows its age. For example, some of the balcony railings are rusted through.
It is pouring with rain, so we head into town in flip-flops and with an umbrella. We wade through flooded streets in places to find a small bar for a few drinks. There is a Carib beer and Ti Punch (the latter made with Rhum Agricole, lime juice, and raw cane sugar — THE drink in Guadeloupe. We didn't know that at the time though, as Dany had been hoping for a cocktail and not for such a strong drink :-) )
