Impressions of George Town
In the morning we weigh anchor off Stocking Island and look for a good anchorage in front of Great Exuma — George Town, only about 1 km west of Stocking Island. We take the dinghy ashore to the dock and stroll through the quiet town.
Restaurant Catch a Fire
In the late afternoon we take a taxi to the west coast, a bit north of George Town, to the beautifully located restaurant Catch a Fire. We want to celebrate my wife Dany's birthday in a nice setting. The sunsets here are fantastic, there are music events, and the grounds are gorgeous. Unfortunately, we have some bad luck with our order for six. We wait an hour, the food arrives cold and at different times.
Given the prices, we had expected a bit more class. The manager couldn't handle our criticism at all and turned rude. Not exactly how we'd pictured Dany's birthday. Thankfully, we'd already celebrated properly the night before. Normally, a visit to Catch a Fire should be lovely — it does have quite good reviews.
Great Exuma - Bahamas
March 30
Today it's time to pack our bags and disembark, sadly. Saying goodbye to our fellow travelers Caro & Dimitri, and of course to Dani & Bernd and the Shangri La, is really hard. So we keep it short, and Bernd takes us ashore with our luggage in the dinghy one last time...
Hotel Augusta Bay**** on Great Exuma
We take a taxi for 10 US$ to our hotel Augusta Bay, just outside the center of George Town, in a lovely bay with two gorgeous beaches. The four-star hotel is quietly situated and very well-kept. Hoopers Bay
Just a 5-minute walk to the north lies the sheltered bay of Hoopers Bay with an absolute dream beach. The beach at the hotel itself is also great, but at low tide you can barely reach deep enough water for swimming.
Fish Fry on Great Exuma
About a 10-minute walk away is the Fish Fry — ideal for dinner or a few cold drinks with the locals. There are numerous restaurants in island style with very tasty, affordable food.
To our surprise and delight, our entire crew shows up at the Fish Fry for a few farewell drinks, and we savor the last evening in the Exumas.

Today we enjoy our dream beach at Hoopers Bay one last time before we have to head home.
The drive to the airstrip takes just 10 minutes, and check-in is refreshingly straightforward. We fly direct to Miami and onward to Zurich. The flight over the Bahamas is like gazing at a gigantic painting. The shallow sandbanks of the Exumas and other island groups leave us with an unforgettable impression...
