Carriacou - Hillsborough

Carriacou Island

April 10

At 8:00 a.m. the ferry departs for the roughly three-hour crossing to Carriacou (EC $80), the most unspoiled island of the Grenadines.

Authentic Caribbean charm like 20 years ago, with stunning picture-perfect beaches such as Paradise Beach overlooking Sandy Island, and the lovely island capital of Hillsborough. Carriacou and its offshore islands and reefs are a paradise for divers and snorkelers.u00a0
For an island tour we hire a taxi. For EC $200 we see the entire island in two and a half hours, with commentary from our local driver. Alternatively, you can explore the island cheaply and easily by local bus.

Paradise Beach on Carriacou

First we drive to the highest point of Carriacou (291 m). Up here you'll find the island hospital and a magnificent view of the surroundings, looking out toward Sandy Island. Unfortunately we're a bit unlucky with the weather today, so the photos are a little gloomier than you'd expect.u00a0

Carriacou tour: EC $200 for two and a half hours by taxi, e.g. with the taxi service of Revington & Welcome Ray:

Mt. Royal, Carriacou, Grenada, West Indies
Tel.: 1 (473) 443-7321 or 1 (473) 443-6548
Mobile: 1 (473) 538-0794 oru00a01 (473) 403-3764

From here we continue to the northern part of the island. Along the way we stop at one of the old windmill ruins and at a boat being built in the traditional Scottish manner.

Hillsborough

April 11

After a long downpour we take a short stroll through Hillsborough – named after Lord Hillsborough, who once owned a large plantation here. In the centre there is a small market and the "bus station." From here you can get to every corner of the island on the cheap. Along the main road you'll find a few shops, banks, bars and restaurants. There is a Botanical Garden, currently under renovation, and the island's only petrol station.

Southern Carriacou

We take the bus and ride through the southern part of Carriacou.
