Mount Pleasant
First, we ride up to Mount Pleasant and hike a short stretch along the Mount Pleasant Trail. From the top, you get a wonderful view of Admiralty Bay and Friendship Bay to the southeast.
Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary
Next, we continue along Belmont Road to the northeast coast and the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary. Along the way, the mountain roads offer stunning views of the east coast.
The Turtle Sanctuary breeds sea turtles and releases them into the wild after five years. The founder is doing his part to support the dwindling turtle population. Unfortunately, many turtles in the Caribbean are still caught and eaten. Nests are also raided, putting the species at serious risk. The official turtle protection season runs from April to August – but by August, most females are already gravid, which means egg-laying is also under threat. Over 800 turtles have been successfully raised and released here so far.
Firefly Plantation Bequia
We spend the afternoon winding down at the Firefly. The Firefly is a hotel with a bar and restaurant set on a plantation in the heart of the island along Belmont Road. The ambiance is beautiful. Here and there, you'll find ruins from bygone eras, and if you need to cool off, the pool on the grounds is the perfect spot. Guided tours of the Firefly Plantation Bequia are also available. A wonderful place for a relaxed dinner or a honeymoon.
