Chutes du Carbet

Day Trip to the East Coast of Basse Terre - Guadeloupe

Friday, October 9th

Today we venture through the congested area around Pointe-à-Pitre to Basse-Terre, the western of the two main islands. We drive along its east coast about 70 km southward. Surprisingly, the drive is completely free of traffic jams!

The Carbet Waterfalls - Chutes du Carbet

Our destination today is the great Chutes du Carbet waterfall – Cascade 2. You can reach this waterfall via the D4 road in the village of Saint-Sauveur. At the end of the road, you arrive at a forestry information center. For just 1 € admission, you get access and helpful information about the various hiking options and current conditions. The trail to the second Carbet waterfall, plunging from a height of 110 meters, has ended at the former suspension bridge since the severe earthquake of 2005 for safety reasons. Enjoy the view of the waterfall, or take the roughly 2.5-hour round trip to the approximately 20-meter-high first cascade. There is also a third waterfall to discover, though an additional two hours of hiking each way are needed to marvel at the 125-meter-high cascade. From there, it is only another hour to the summit of La Soufrière.

Grand Etang on Basse Terre

Afterwards, we visit the mountain lake Grand Etang, a 15-minute drive below the waterfalls. Here you also have the opportunity to walk a beautiful circular trail around the lake. About one hour at the lake with moorhens, kingfishers, giant bamboo, rainforest vegetation, and plenty of mosquitoes – our tip: bring OFF spray and sturdy shoes.

East Coast of Basse Terre

On the way back, we make a short stop at Capesterre-Belle-Eau. From here, you can take an alternative route to the Carbet Waterfalls that passes through the palm-lined avenue L'Allée Dumanoir. This avenue was planted in 1850 with 430 royal palms along a one-kilometer stretch.

After another 3 km, we pass a beautiful Hindu temple before making a brief stop at Sainte-Marie to photograph the monument commemorating Columbus's landing on Guadeloupe. Heavily armed police special forces make a longer stay here rather uncomfortable.

After several police checkpoints – something must have happened here – we reach Petit-Bourg. A cozy fishing village that invites you to stroll around, provided it is not pouring with rain.
