Exploring Staniel Cay
March 25
First thing, just before 8:00, we move to a deeper bay since a low-pressure system with swell is forecast for today.
Thunderball Grotto
Today we visit the Thunderball Grotto, famous from the James Bond film. Bernd takes us to the grotto by dinghy. Equipped with wetsuits, masks, and fish food, we dive in. Caution is needed due to the swell. Inside the grotto, silence reigns. We are surrounded by countless fish that are used to being fed... watch out: every now and then, bread gets confused with fingers. Unimpressed by this spectacle, a curious barracuda watches us from a distance. The James Bond sharks that supposedly inhabit the grotto (according to the film) were apparently taken home by the film crew.
Walking Tour of Staniel Cay - Bahamas
After this excursion, we freshen up. On the agenda: island exploration. The dinghy drops us off at the dock of an unfinished luxury house north of the marina. We walk across the northern tip of the island, past a lake, and along partly rugged trails past a beautiful beach until we finally reach the settlement with about 100 inhabitants. The village doesn't offer much, but there's a church, a "clinic" (the nurse also doubles as our dinner waitress!), a bar, and two restaurants. We book a table at the Taste Sea Cafe for dinner — the coconut shrimp are highly recommended! At the bar, we meet some intriguing characters who got stuck on the island, and on our way back to the boat we stop by the Staniel Cay Yacht Club for a nightcap over a game of pool.
