Swimming Pigs at Major Spot - Staniel Cay

March 24

At 08:30 we set off again: heading for Major Spot, the world-famous island with the swimming pigs. We take the dinghy over with some food. As soon as the pigs hear a motor, they start moving. Oh yes, the swimming pigs are proper big pigs — no mini-pigs! Also, only the full-grown female pigs swim in the water. The little ones stand on the beach hoping to get some scraps. Wonderful! We spend an hour on the beach watching the remarkably trusting pigs, which you can even pet. Reluctantly, we say goodbye to our piggies and the dinghy picks us up... We watch some nurse sharks and stingrays swimming around our boat before heading on to Staniel Cay.

Dinner at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club

Once at the anchorage, we go for a round of snorkeling before getting ready for dinner at the Staniel Cay marina. There, we admire the luxury motorboats moored in the marina and the masses of nurse sharks and rays swimming around, hoping for fish scraps from the fishermen — and getting them, too. We have dinner at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club in the marina. You can order a set menu here (reservation required), but also lighter fare, or simply sit at the bar and enjoy a cocktail — the piña colada is highly recommended!
At 9 PM we return to the Shangri La, still worn out from the previous night's party. The tide is now out — we find the boat with roughly 50 cm of water under the keel... quite tight, but also too tight to move the boat...
