Island Tour by Taxi

Island Tour on Tobago

Friday, October 17th

We book a taxi at short notice for an island tour.

Arnos Vale Hotel

Our first stop is the Arnos Vale Hotel, now the oldest hotel on the island on the Caribbean side, and the Beatles are said to have stayed here too. (The Blue Heaven in Scarborough is the second oldest hotel on Tobago).
The manor house of the associated sugar cane plantation once stood here.

In the area around the hotel there are plenty of hiking trails and lots of birds to observe. During our hike today on the Mot Mot Trail, we see the Mot Mot for the first time, a wonderfully colorful bird.

We also discover termites, wild bees, and wild bananas growing everywhere. Unfortunately, we don't have time to visit the nearby Arnos Vale Bay.

Arnos Vale Waterwheel Park

Our second stop is the Arnos Vale Waterwheel Park — here you can find the remains of an old sugar cane plantation mill.
A restaurant has been built around the ruins of the old mill.
It looks rather simple, but that's exactly what gives it its charm. Bats hang in the rafters or swoop past your head. Large iguanas can be seen everywhere and the atmosphere is very romantic.
Small hiking trails have been laid out around the restaurant — signs identify the plants by their local names.
You should not miss a visit to this historically significant site. A small museum rounds off the tour.

Admission costs 10 TT$ if you come just for sightseeing and not for dining.

Along the Coast

Englishman Bay

The Englishman Bay is our next stop. We find a huge dream beach with only two other bathers besides us. A local sits on his vehicle offering us homemade ice cream — very delicious. There is also a very small restaurant and otherwise nothing but peace and quiet.

During our swim, fish suddenly fly between us, shortly followed by several vigorous splashes. Someone must have been hungry?

We enjoy the paradise-like atmosphere before continuing leisurely to Mount Irvine for bird watching an hour and a half later.

Mount Irvine — Grafton Caledonia Wildlife Estate

We visit the Grafton Caledonia Wildlife Estate on a former coconut plantation. The old drying shed has been converted into a visitor center.

On the grounds there are several hiking trails through the forest, leading to the dilapidated stables of the past and into the rainforest.
Wherever you look or listen, there are birds of all kinds. At 4:00 PM, the daily bird feeding takes place. Mot Mots, the national bird Cocrico, and many other species can be observed up close.

Our excursion ends here and we have the taxi take us back to the hotel. The taxi including guide costs us 90 US$.

Sunset

We end the evening in the whirlpool of the neighboring apart-hotel complex while watching the sunset.
