Annandale Falls
Annandale Falls is about 20 minutes from St. George's. It's best to visit when no cruise ship is in port, as otherwise countless vendors and tourists crowd around the 9-meter waterfall. The falls are set in beautifully landscaped grounds with numerous herbs and plants, and today we're in luck — there's no ship in port and only four visitors around.
Grand Etang National Park
We continue uphill into the Grand Etang National Park rainforest and visit the Visitor Center. A trail leads in about 15 minutes to a lookout platform with magnificent views of the east coast and the Grand Etang Crater Lake. We're lucky and encounter a small troop of capuchin monkeys who curiously surround us. For hikers, there's a 90-minute loop trail around the lake as well as the Mount Qua Qua Trail (3 hours).
Leapers Hill or Morne de Sauteurs
Time is running a bit short, so we drive straight to Sauteurs in the north. If you have time, you should stop along the way to visit the River Antoine Rum Distillery — it has been in operation since 1785 and has hardly changed to this day.
We take a break at Caribs Leap — Leapers Hill, where legend has it that the last Caribs took their own lives in 1651 to escape slavery, although this has since been disputed.
Levera National Park
A bit further east we reach Levera Pond, a crater lake that can be walked around in about an hour. Unfortunately, a large luxury hotel resort is planned for this idyllic spot.
At Levera Beach we enjoy the glorious sunshine. This is where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea. On this 1-kilometer stretch of sand, the rare leatherback sea turtle lays its eggs — sadly, locals not infrequently dig them up illegally for consumption.
On the way to Levera Bay, you'll find the lovely Bathway Beach, perfect for swimming.
