Soller Bay on Mallorca

Northern Barbados

The North of Barbados

April 21

Today we explore the northern part of Barbados. We set off at 8:30 from Oistins.

Nicholas Abbey

Our first stop is Nicholas Abbey, the oldest English plantation house on the island, dating back to 1650. The drive from the south takes about an hour. Admission is US$ 17.50 for a tour of the house and plantation.

Cherry Tree Hill & Morgan Lewis Windmill

Next, we enjoy the magnificent view from Cherry Tree Hill over the Atlantic coast of Barbados.
A few kilometers further, we reach the Morgan Lewis Windmill. It is the last functioning windmill on Barbados and has been meticulously restored. There is a small exhibition to visit.

At the Grenade Hall Signal Station we make another stop and enjoy a stunning view of the Atlantic coast of Barbados. A few hundred meters further, we visit Farley Hill National Park with its pleasant picnic area and gorgeous coastal views. Here you can also see the ruins of the manor house, which burned down to its walls in the 1960s. Admission US$ 1.75

The Barbados Wildlife Reserve is a beautifully designed animal sanctuary. In addition to many native species, there are also some exotic animals to see.

Animal Flower Cave

The Animal Flower Cave is located at the northern tip of Barbados and is a cave carved into a steep, towering cliff. You can descend a staircase and gaze out from the cliff face at the powerful surf that regularly sends waves crashing into the cave. Unfortunately, we don't spot any of the sea anemones the cave is named after during our visit. However, a pod of humpback whales passes by several times just off the coast.

Speightstown

We make our next stop in the northwestern town of Speightstown. Charming old wooden houses in colonial style line the streets. After a quick bite, we head back south.

Folkestone Marine Park

At Folkestone Marine Park above St. James Church near Holetown, we take a swim break and enjoy a gorgeous sunset. There is parking, picnic areas, and showers. The marine park is very popular with snorkelers.
