South and East Grenada

Exploring the South and East Coast of Grenada — Caribbean

April 7

Today we explore the south and parts of the east coast of Grenada. Our first stop is the Grenada Distillers Rum Factory. For a few dollars you can tour the factory and of course stock up on rum.

A few kilometers further we reach the Westerhall Rum Factory with its beautiful ruins. The grounds of the old distillery can be explored freely. You can also visit the newer factory with a rum tasting. There is a small museum and a shop. Open: Monday–Friday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Admission is free.

At the Laura Spice Garden

Just a few kilometers further, at the first roundabout past Westerhall, we turn left toward Pedmontemps and reach the Laura Spice Garden. It is a beautifully laid-out plantation on the slopes of the rainforest, featuring all of Grenada's herbs and spices. A guided tour costs EC$ 15 and is especially worthwhile for herb enthusiasts, as you learn everything about the plants and their uses.

La Sagesse Bay — Grenada

Near Bacolet we take a detour to La Sagesse Bay. There is a hotel and a bar where we grab a refreshing drink. The water is not very clear, but it is shallow and great for children.

Royal Mount Carmel Waterfall

In pouring rain we continue to the Royal Mount Carmel Waterfall on the east coast. The entrance is well hidden near the crossroads (it looks like a garden gate) and can easily be explored without a guide. Otherwise, make sure to agree on a price for the guided tour beforehand — it can get expensive.

Afterwards we visit the capital St. George's Town. A walking tour with lots of photos can be found here: Walking Tour of St. George's Town
