Ocho Rios — "Eight Rivers"
The boomtown well known among cruise tourists got its name Ocho Rios — "eight rivers" — presumably through a mistranslation or mishearing. Originally called Las Chorreras — "The Waterfalls" — after the island's most famous attraction that visitors can actually climb: "Dunn's River Falls". Nearby, the beautiful botanical gardens Shaw Park Gardens and Coyaba Gardens are well worth a visit.
Dunn's River Falls in Jamaica is a breathtaking natural wonder that attracts thousands of visitors every year. The waterfall stands approximately 180 feet (55 meters) tall and stretches over a length of about 600 feet (183 meters).
The falls are a centerpiece of Dunn's River Falls & Park, a public park in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The park covers roughly 72 hectares and offers a variety of activities including hiking, swimming, snorkeling, and boating.
A unique feature of Dunn's River Falls is that visitors can actually climb the waterfall. This is done through a guided tour where participants form a human chain and scale the rocks together, accompanied by an experienced guide. The climb is a one-of-a-kind experience that requires a certain level of physical fitness and coordination.
Dunn's River Falls also holds a significant place in Jamaican culture and history. The Arawak people are believed to have considered the falls a sacred site, using them for spiritual ceremonies. Throughout history, the falls were utilized by various conquerors and colonial powers before eventually becoming a public park.
All in all, Dunn's River Falls is a stunning example of the beauty and diversity of Jamaica's landscape and culture. Whether you want to climb the waterfall or simply take in the surroundings, a visit to this awe-inspiring natural wonder is an unforgettable experience.
